LGBTQ+ Healthcare Study

This study explores the impact of distinct parental support types – emotional, instrumental, and autonomy support – on depression and suicidal ideation among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents. Using data from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), we analyze disparities in parental support and mental health outcomes between LGB and heterosexual individuals. The research investigates whether these forms of parental support act as protective factors, particularly benefiting LGB and bisexual individuals. This study offers insights into fostering resilience and tailoring interventions for improved mental well-being among LGB youth.

Workplace DEI training and initiatives often fall short of improving the culture of inclusivity in the organization, and there is growing recognition that this may be because they do not motivate or inspire people to change. We have been applying motivational theory and strategies such as empathizing with feelings that may come up for attendees and avoiding shaming and blaming language to DEI efforts with police officers and staff in the UK, and have begun interventions in other workplace contexts. Motivational approaches that inspire - versus force- a personal commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion appear promising.

Nonsuicidal Self-Injury and Substance Use among American College Students

Amid a wealth of studies showing a strong connection between substance use disorders and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among college students and adults, there's still a gap in understanding how relationship dynamics, substance use, and NSSI behaviors interact in the USA. Our survey-based study aims to explore the relationships between substance use, demographic factors, relationship qualities, and non-suicidal self-injury. The insights we gather could play a significant role in guiding the development of clinical interventions designed to address the unique challenges faced by college students.
